InfantSEE®: Well-Baby Vision Check-Ups
We are proud participants of the InfantSEE® program and provide free infant eye exams in Pembroke Pines.
The Eye Center is proud to provide infant eye and vision health at no cost through the InfantSEE® program. This vital service is provided free of charge thanks to Optometry’s Charity™ – The AOA Foundation and The Vision Care Institute™, LLC a Johnson & Johnson company. InfantSEE® was launched in 2005 to ensure that eye and vision care is an integral part of infant well-baby check-ups.
What to Expect During a Baby’s Eye Exam
Professional eye exams for babies are vital to identifying critical eye and vision problems at an early age. This early diagnosis may help your child avoid more serious problems later in life as well as discover any needed vision correction. Our doctors will also help explain any existing conditions to you as well as the best next steps to keep your child healthy and happy.
During our pediatric eye exam, our doctors will assess:
- Whether patient history suggests a problem may be present or arise in the future
- If your baby can see
- If your baby’s eyes are straight
- The health of your baby’s eyes and eye structures
- If intervention is necessary
Eye exams for infants and toddlers may include tests to assess whether the infant can fix their eyes on and follow an object. Because babies are not able to communicate their needs, we modify eye exams for adults to match your child’s level of understanding. For example, the doctor may use their hands, a light, or a toy to catch the baby’s attention and see how the baby follows the movements of the object.
Our eye doctors will also examine the baby’s eye and surrounding structures like the eyelids, tear ducts, and more to make sure that they are in good health.
Pupil function will be checked as well during your’s child eye examination, and a hand-held biomicroscope may be used for evaluation of the front of the eye. We will also assess the visual field and dilate the pupils to examine the inner eye. An ideal time for evaluation of the posterior segment is when the infant is in a calm, relaxed, condition (i.e., being bottle-fed or when they are sound asleep).
